If he went out to the Ahaggar plateau, it was not only to find but also to proclaim God, thereby teaching the gospel in a way which desert people could understand. After his death, the example set by this hermit was followed by others who, far from settling in the desert places of the Sahara, set out to mingle with the peopled deserts of the great cities, there to preach the gospel by their example and their very presence.

The old are in a second childhood.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/1707

The old are in a second childhood.

Most people would rather die than think; in fact, they do so.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/11328

Most people would rather die than think; in fact, they do so.

But I will trace the footsteps of the chief events. [Lat., Sed summa sequar fastigia rerum.]

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/16417

But I will trace the footsteps of the chief events. [Lat., Sed summa sequar fastigia rerum.]

Architecture is music in space, as it were a frozen music

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/3007

Architecture is music in space, as it were a frozen music

Good manners and soft words have brought many a difficult thing to pass

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/26337

Good manners and soft words have brought many a difficult thing to pass

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/25713

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.

Feast of William Tyndale, Translator of the Scriptures, Martyr, 1536 [William Tyndale] was a master of a simple ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/6838

Feast of William Tyndale, Translator of the Scriptures, Martyr, 1536 [William Tyndale] was a master of a simple and forceful literary style. This, combined with exactness and breadth of scholarship, led him so to translate the Greek New Testament into English as largely to determine the character, form, and style of the Authorized Version. There have been some painstaking calculations to determine just how large a part Tyndale may have had in the production of the version of 1611. A comparison of Tyndale's version of I John and that of the Authorized Version shows that nine-tenths of the latter is retained from the martyred translator's work. Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians retains five-sixths of Tyndale's translation. These proportions are maintained throughout the entire New Testament. Such an influence as that upon the English Bible cannot be attributed to any other man in all the past. More than that, Tyndale set a standard for the English language that molded in part the character and style of the tongue during the great Elizabethan era and all subsequent time. He gave the language fixity, volubleness, grace, beauty, simplicity, and directness. His influence as a man of letters was permanent on the style and literary taste of the English people, and of all who admire the superiority and epochal character of the literature of the sixteenth century.

I never apologize!

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/28026

I never apologize!

The choicest pleasures of life lie within the ring of moderation.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/42884

The choicest pleasures of life lie within the ring of moderation.

There is no such thing as happiness, only lesser shades of melancholy.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/26829

There is no such thing as happiness, only lesser shades of melancholy.

All Nature is but art unknown to thee; All chance direction, which thou canst not see; All discord, harmony ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/54252

All Nature is but art unknown to thee; All chance direction, which thou canst not see; All discord, harmony not understood; All partial evil, universal good; And spite of pride, in erring reason's spite, One truth is clear, Whatever is is right.

I don't know anyone who curses the way they do on the Sopranos.
