Therefore he must not feel too keenly the burden of responsibility, because at the end of the day all he can say is, "We are unprofitable servants". This knowledge, far from inhibiting action, actually releases the Christian from that appalling feeling of responsibility that has driven so many high-minded humanists to despair, even to suicide... Work done conscientiously by the Christian is his share in Christ's service; but it is Christ's service, and therefore the Christian need neither be proud because it has succeeded or overwhelmed because it has failed. The service of Christ is supremely expressed in the apparent failure of the Cross.

Brevity is the body and soul of wit.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/61838

Brevity is the body and soul of wit.

And wheresoe'er thou move, good luck Shall fling her old shoe after.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/26026

And wheresoe'er thou move, good luck Shall fling her old shoe after.

Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/56232

Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

The sad part is, we voted for him because we believed him.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/33462

The sad part is, we voted for him because we believed him.

The American people deserve to know that they're not just watching the administration's spin on their local newscasts -- they're ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/44451

The American people deserve to know that they're not just watching the administration's spin on their local newscasts -- they're paying for it, too.

There is a tremendous strength that is growing in the world through... sharing together, praying together, suffering together, and working ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/60952

There is a tremendous strength that is growing in the world through... sharing together, praying together, suffering together, and working together.

I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a wearer of new clothes.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/12969

I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a wearer of new clothes.

It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/11467

It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it.

Verse is not written, it is bled; Out of the poet's abstract head. Study the advertisements in any popular magazine: people are "invited to apply for membership"; "members will receive a catalogue"; they are even offered "rules", which they gladly accept because the need for authority lies heavily upon them; they then receive a card admitting them to the circle, with the "President's signature" printed on it. In the need for belonging, the acknowledgement of dependence, may lie the greatest opportunity of the Christian evangelist. It is not unlike the conditions under which the early Church worked. In the later Roman Empire, crumbling under its own size, its communications and resources stretched to the utmost, the mystery-religions came into their own. Rites of initiation, the sharing of secret knowledge, offered to people of all classes an escape from the perplexities of life, a retreat into a closed circle of the elect where they might feel that their transformed personalities had some significance. Who can know how many weary souls there were who strayed into the Church through rumours of a secret rite of purification, of a shared meal that conferred wisdom, and who remained to comprehend the fullness of the Godhead, a belonging greater than they had ever imagined.

Men are able to trust one another, knowing the exact degree of dishonesty they are entitled to expect.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/12541

Men are able to trust one another, knowing the exact degree of dishonesty they are entitled to expect.

To kill a relative of whom you are tired is one thing.
