Instead of the living, loving, self-manifesting God of the Old Testament Israel now took hold of the abstract idea of the unity, or rather the unicity, of God, as if that were God. Before -- when they lived in communion with God, when God was known to them as a Person, speaking, acting, blessing, who had chosen them, who was educating them, and who was going to fulfill His promises -- they declared, in opposition to the idolatrous nations that surrounded them, that this God of Israel was one God, that there are not many gods; but when they lost communion with God, in order to show what distinguished them from the nations of the earth, and especially from Christians, they emphasized that God in Himself was only one Person, and not as He is revealed to us in the Scripture: Sender, Sent, and Spirit. It is the boast of the modern Jewish synagogue that their great mission is to testify to the world the unity of God. But it is a striking fact that the Gentile nations who have, since the dispersion of Israel, been converted from idolatry, have been influenced, not by the synagogue, but by the congregations of Jesus Christ, and were baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost... It is one thing to believe in justification by faith, it is another thing to be justified by faith; and so it is one thing to believe in God, who is One, and it is another to believe in the numerical abstraction, in the mere idea of unicity.

Happiness is not always measured in smiles.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/18670

Happiness is not always measured in smiles.

Show me the books he loves and I shall know the man far better than through mortal friends.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/4709

Show me the books he loves and I shall know the man far better than through mortal friends.

Modern architecture does not mean the use of immature new materials; the main thing is to refine materials in a ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/29001

Modern architecture does not mean the use of immature new materials; the main thing is to refine materials in a more human direction.

As Love and I late harbour'd in one inn, With proverbs thus each other entertain; "In love there is ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/51895

As Love and I late harbour'd in one inn, With proverbs thus each other entertain; "In love there is no lack," thus I begin; "Fair words make fools," replieth he again; "Who spares to speak doth spare to speed," quoth I; "As well," saith he, "too forward as too slow"; "Fortune assists the boldest," I reply; "A hasty man," quote he, "ne'er wanted woe"; "Labour is light where love," quote I, "doth pay"; "Light burden's heavy, if far borne"; Quoth I, "The main lost, cast the by away"; "Y'have spun a fair thread," he replies in scorn. And having thus awhile each other thwarted Fools as we met, so fools again we parted.

Commemoration of John Mason Neale, Priest, Poet, 1866 Think it not hard if you get not your will, ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/6701

Commemoration of John Mason Neale, Priest, Poet, 1866 Think it not hard if you get not your will, nor your delights in this life; God will have you to rejoice in nothing but himself.

Steadfastness is a noble quality, but unguided by knowledge or humility it becomes rashness or obstinacy.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/16039

Steadfastness is a noble quality, but unguided by knowledge or humility it becomes rashness or obstinacy.

It takes time to persuade men to do even what is for their own good.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/65358

It takes time to persuade men to do even what is for their own good.

Who's General Failure and why's he reading my disk?

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/9409

Who's General Failure and why's he reading my disk?

Of course, it's very easy to be witty tomorrow, after you get a chance to do some research and rehearse ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/59469

Of course, it's very easy to be witty tomorrow, after you get a chance to do some research and rehearse your ad libs.

Wonder is the basis of worship

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/61958

Wonder is the basis of worship

He is a heavy eater of beef. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in all of us. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Wouldst thou, or thou, Forego what's now, For all that hope may say? No--joy's reply, ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/50685

Wouldst thou, or thou, Forego what's now, For all that hope may say? No--joy's reply, From every eye, Is, "Live we while we may."

To accept good advice is but to increase one's own ability

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/763

To accept good advice is but to increase one's own ability

He can do most who has most power.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/50861

He can do most who has most power.

The manufacturing surveys from September confirm that there has been no broad-based deterioration in activity due to the energy price ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/36350

The manufacturing surveys from September confirm that there has been no broad-based deterioration in activity due to the energy price spike in the aftermath of Katrina.
