The intellectual heritage of the race belongs to the minority, and to the minority only. The majority has no more to do with it than it has to do with ecclesiastic politics on Mars. In so far as that heritage is apprehended, it is viewed with enmity. But in the main it is not apprehended at all.

I said to the brown, brown thrush: "Hush, hush! Through the wood's full strains I hear Thy ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/59254

I said to the brown, brown thrush: "Hush, hush! Through the wood's full strains I hear Thy monotone deep and clear, Like a sound amid sounds most fine."

In the communities of the faithful, men had to impress upon themselves and upon others what Jesus said and did, ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/6195

In the communities of the faithful, men had to impress upon themselves and upon others what Jesus said and did, for the more convinced they were that he was neither a Jewish pretender nor an unsubstantial deity like one of the deities of the cults, the more urgent it was for them to recall that his words were the rule of their life, and that his actions in history had created their position in the world; they had to think out their faith, to state it against outside criticism, and to teach it within their own circle, instead of being content with it as a mere emotion; they had also to refresh their courage by anticipating the future, which they believed was in the hands of their Lord. The common basis of their life was the conviction that they enjoyed a new relationship with God, for which they were indebted to Jesus. The technical term for this relationship was "covenant", and "covenant" became eventually in their vocabulary "testament". Hence the later name for these writings of the church, when gathered into a sacred collection, was "The New Testament" -- New because the older relationship of God to his people, which had obtained under Judaism, with its Old Testament was superseded by the faith and fellowship which Jesus Christ his Son had inaugurated. It was the consciousness of this that inspired the early Christians to live, and to write about the origin and applications of this new life. They wrote for their own age, without a thought of posterity, and they did not write in unison but in harmony.

I found that our Soviet espionage efforts had virtually never, or had very seldom, produced any worthwhile political or economic ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/28759

I found that our Soviet espionage efforts had virtually never, or had very seldom, produced any worthwhile political or economic intelligence on the Soviet Union.

Java is much more programmer-friendly than C or C++, or was for a few years there until they made just ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/41412

Java is much more programmer-friendly than C or C++, or was for a few years there until they made just as complicated. Study the advertisements in any popular magazine: people are "invited to apply for membership"; "members will receive a catalogue"; they are even offered "rules", which they gladly accept because the need for authority lies heavily upon them; they then receive a card admitting them to the circle, with the "President's signature" printed on it. In the need for belonging, the acknowledgement of dependence, may lie the greatest opportunity of the Christian evangelist. It is not unlike the conditions under which the early Church worked. In the later Roman Empire, crumbling under its own size, its communications and resources stretched to the utmost, the mystery-religions came into their own. Rites of initiation, the sharing of secret knowledge, offered to people of all classes an escape from the perplexities of life, a retreat into a closed circle of the elect where they might feel that their transformed personalities had some significance. Who can know how many weary souls there were who strayed into the Church through rumours of a secret rite of purification, of a shared meal that conferred wisdom, and who remained to comprehend the fullness of the Godhead, a belonging greater than they had ever imagined.

Investigations during the last few decades have brought hydrogen instead of carbon, and instead of CO2 water, the mother of ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/63721

Investigations during the last few decades have brought hydrogen instead of carbon, and instead of CO2 water, the mother of all life, into the foreground.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/61218

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

I said to the sky-poised Lark: "Hark--hark! Thy note is more loud and free Because there lies ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/24099

I said to the sky-poised Lark: "Hark--hark! Thy note is more loud and free Because there lies safe for thee A little nest on the ground."

Few things in the world are more powerful than a positive push.
