What it did was to guarantee that the old morality was actually valid, and the old beliefs literally true. "Ye worship ye know not what, but we know what we worship," "that which we have seen with our eyes and our hands have handled" -- "He suffered under Pontius Pilate." God died -- not in a legend, not in a symbol, not in a distant past nor in a realm unknown, but here, [in the crucifiction of Christ]; the whole great cloudy castle of natural religion and poetic prophecy is brought down to earth and firmly cemented upon that angular and solid cornerstone.

What most impresses us about great jurists is not their tenacious grasps of fine points, honed almost to invisibility; it ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/19511

What most impresses us about great jurists is not their tenacious grasps of fine points, honed almost to invisibility; it is the moment when we are suddently aware of the sweep and direction of the law, and its place in the lives of men.

Feast of Bartholomew the Apostle It is often said with a sneer that the God of Israel was only ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/8135

Feast of Bartholomew the Apostle It is often said with a sneer that the God of Israel was only a God of Battles, "a mere barbaric Lord of Hosts" pitted in rivalry against other gods only as their envious foe. Well it is for the world that He was indeed a God of Battles. Well it is for us that He was to all the rest only a rival and a foe. In the ordinary way, it would have been only too easy for them to have achieved the desolate disaster of conceiving Him as a friend. It would have been only too easy for them to have seen Him stretching out His hands in love and reconciliation, embracing Baal and kissing the painted face of Astarte... It would have been easy enough for His worshipers to follow the enlightened course of Syncretism and the pooling of all the pagan traditions. It is obvious indeed that His followers were always sliding down this easy slope; and it required the almost demoniac energy of certain inspired demagogues, who testified to the divine unity in words that are still like winds of inspiration and ruin, [to stop them]. The more we really understand of the ancient conditions that contributed to the final culture of the Faith, the more we shall have a real and even a realistic reverence for the greatness of the Prophets of Israel. As it was, while the whole world melted into this mass of confused mythology, this Deity who is called tribal and narrow, precisely because He was what is called tribal and narrow, preserved the primary religion of all mankind. He was tribal enough to be universal. He was as narrow as the universe.

Bring poppies for a weary mind That saddens in a senseless din.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/47696

Bring poppies for a weary mind That saddens in a senseless din.

I think loss of loved ones is the hardest blow in life.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/66470

I think loss of loved ones is the hardest blow in life.

The bravest are the most tender; the loving are the daring.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/63384

The bravest are the most tender; the loving are the daring.

Promises are the uniquely human way of ordering the future, making it predictable and reliable to the extent that this ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/36273

Promises are the uniquely human way of ordering the future, making it predictable and reliable to the extent that this is humanly possible.

Dirigo [I lead]

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/43287

Dirigo [I lead]

It is quite true that the Greek word ekklesia comes from two roots which mean literally "called out." Many preachers have made use of this fact to point out helpful spiritual implications; and yet, by New Testament times, the word carried no such denotation as "called out." It was simply the word for "assembly" or "congregation." It so happened that in the Greek city-states an assembly of the citizenry resulted from the people being called out of their city and summoned from their farms to participate in such gatherings. Even though the etymology of the word remains, its real meaning is just "assembly," and a Greek-speaking person of New Testament times would be no more inclined to understand ekklesia in its original etymological value of "called out" than we today would recognize "God be with you" in "good-by," which, as we may learn from the dictionary, was derived from the longer phrase.

If all men knew what others say of them, there would not be four friends in the world.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/27948

If all men knew what others say of them, there would not be four friends in the world.

I'm spending a year dead for tax reasons.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/34012

I'm spending a year dead for tax reasons.

A timid person is frightened before a danger, a coward during the time, and a courageous person afterwards.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/11073

A timid person is frightened before a danger, a coward during the time, and a courageous person afterwards.

The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/59708

The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.

The more we exploit nature, The more our options are reduced, until we have only one: to fight for survival.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/58393

The more we exploit nature, The more our options are reduced, until we have only one: to fight for survival.

Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/1344

Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day.

Humanity to me is not a mob.
