They are trying to save the Christians out of this labyrinth by reuniting the divided churches, by forming an alliance of churches, or by trying to form an ecumenical church. For all that, it seems very difficult to obtain the desired result, because all the present churches are still standing on the principles of the Reformation, unable to rid themselves of the sectarian spirit inherited from Catholicism. So the number of denominations and sects shows no sign of decreasing, and all efforts to unite the churches seem likely to end only in the formation of yet other sects and denominations. Yet the center of Christianity is neither institution nor organization. Nor is it even the Bible itself, as the Reformers made it, for the Eklesia existed before the formation of the New Testament canon. Christians were in fellowship with God and one another, centering their faith in Christ, long before there was any accepted New Testament. There is only one center of Christianity -- spiritual fellowship with God through Jesus Christ.

To teach is to learn twice. The deep, seemingly indestructible awareness of something like homesickness for God is the natural basis for believing in some kind of "fall" -- we seem to remember something better and to be possessed to recapture it. There appears to be a gap, a chasm, between God and us which must be crossed if we are to be in relationship with him. We know that our own wrongdoing can widen the chasm: we are not so sure what will close it. Yet our first great need is not for a set of rules about how to be good: it is for something to bridge that yawning canyon between us and the God we dimly seem to remember, but cannot entirely forget.

Chill penury repress'd their noble rage, And froze the genial current of the soul.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/47887

Chill penury repress'd their noble rage, And froze the genial current of the soul.

The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/1720

The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it soon cut off, and we fly away.

I'll be damned for never a king's son in Christendom.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/58477

I'll be damned for never a king's son in Christendom.

'Tis not the food, but the content, That makes the table's merriment.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/13201

'Tis not the food, but the content, That makes the table's merriment.

He who has not an adventure has not horse or mule, so says Solomon.--Who is too adventurous, said Echephron,--loses horse ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/669

He who has not an adventure has not horse or mule, so says Solomon.--Who is too adventurous, said Echephron,--loses horse and mule. [Fr., Qui ne s'adventure n'a cheval ny mule, ce dist Salomon.--Qui trop, dist Echephron, s'adventure--perd cheval et mule, respondit Malcon.]

Gardens are a form of autobiography.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/17190

Gardens are a form of autobiography.

The wages of sin are death, but by the time taxes aretaken out, it's just sort of a tired feeling.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/22162

The wages of sin are death, but by the time taxes aretaken out, it's just sort of a tired feeling.

A man is related to all nature.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/26238

A man is related to all nature.

I am grieved that it should be said he is my brother, and take these courses.
