Study the advertisements in any popular magazine: people are "invited to apply for membership"; "members will receive a catalogue"; they are even offered "rules", which they gladly accept because the need for authority lies heavily upon them; they then receive a card admitting them to the circle, with the "President's signature" printed on it. In the need for belonging, the acknowledgement of dependence, may lie the greatest opportunity of the Christian evangelist. It is not unlike the conditions under which the early Church worked. In the later Roman Empire, crumbling under its own size, its communications and resources stretched to the utmost, the mystery-religions came into their own. Rites of initiation, the sharing of secret knowledge, offered to people of all classes an escape from the perplexities of life, a retreat into a closed circle of the elect where they might feel that their transformed personalities had some significance. Who can know how many weary souls there were who strayed into the Church through rumours of a secret rite of purification, of a shared meal that conferred wisdom, and who remained to comprehend the fullness of the Godhead, a belonging greater than they had ever imagined.

In time we hate that which we often fear.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/18862

In time we hate that which we often fear.

I've watched Ginn a lot, and I'm not sure I've seen a faster player in pads. For if the attribute "Christian" can be given sense from Eph. 2, then it means reconciled and reconciling, triumphant over walls and removing the debris, showing solidarity with the "enemy" and promoting not one's own peace of mind but "our peace"... When this peace is deprived of its social, national, or economic dimensions, when it is distorted or emasculated so much that only "peace of mind" enjoyed by saintly individuals is left -- then Jesus Christ is being flatly denied. To propose, in the name of Christianity, neutrality or unconcern on questions of international, racial, or economic peace -- this amounts to using Christ's name in vain.

Maybe I'm lucky to be going so slowly, because I may be going in the wrong direction

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/26005

Maybe I'm lucky to be going so slowly, because I may be going in the wrong direction

The flood of print has turned reading into a process of gulping rather than savoring.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/4566

The flood of print has turned reading into a process of gulping rather than savoring.

Motivation will almost always beat mere talent.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/58579

Motivation will almost always beat mere talent.

Confusion is a word we have invented for an order which is not yet understood

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/9747

Confusion is a word we have invented for an order which is not yet understood

We must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/11640

We must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.

And if you can be merry then, I'll say A man may weep upon his wedding day.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/27416

And if you can be merry then, I'll say A man may weep upon his wedding day.

Cruelty is a part of nature, at least of human nature, but it is the one thing that seems unnatural ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/10784

Cruelty is a part of nature, at least of human nature, but it is the one thing that seems unnatural to us

I always try to balance the light with the heavy -- a few tears of human spirit in with the ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/3683

I always try to balance the light with the heavy -- a few tears of human spirit in with the sequins and the fringes.

I would be a billionaire if I was looking to be a selfish boss. It was there that he received the first public witness of his Messianic role and found his first followers. The gospel was to be rooted in John's teaching of asceticism and regeneration. But we see from the start that the gospel of Jesus was to be quite different. To the baptism of water would be added the baptism of the Spirit, and the new message was to be addressed to all. The widening of the circle of hearers and converts, which had preoccupied John, was to expand still further with the gospel of Jesus. Of the hundreds of thousands of Jews, the Essenes only regarded as saved a few thousand elect. Jesus was soon to offer the Covenant of God to all men.

Everything that can be invented has been invented.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/9322

Everything that can be invented has been invented.

Glory drags all men along, low as well as high, bound captive at the wheels of her glittering car. [Lat., ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/17547

Glory drags all men along, low as well as high, bound captive at the wheels of her glittering car. [Lat., Fulgente trahit constrictos Gloria curru Non minus ignotos generosis.]

Snobbery is the pride of those who are not sure of their position

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/56706

Snobbery is the pride of those who are not sure of their position

They don't let us inside... they don't give us a chance to put our case. The more knowledge, the more obligation. The maintaining of revealed doctrine becomes blasphemy if it is not borne out by the corresponding testimony of the life. He who is always appealing to the Word of God without his life and conduct corresponding to this knowledge of God, dishonours God's name, making Him an object of mockery and hatred. It is just those who know so well how to talk about God who make His name hateful among men, because their lives darken the picture of God and turn it into a caricature. The Lord is judged by the life of His servants; this is the truer, the more zealously they appeal to Him.

I call'd the devil, and he came, And with wonder his form did I closely scan; He is not ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/12146

I call'd the devil, and he came, And with wonder his form did I closely scan; He is not ugly, and is not lame, But really a handsome and charming man. A man in the prime of life is the devil, Obliging, a man of the world, and civil; A diplomatist too, well skill'd in debate, He talks quite glibly of church and state.

Monotheism is a gift from the gods.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/220

Monotheism is a gift from the gods.

I blame my mother for nothing, but forgive her for everything.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/43179

I blame my mother for nothing, but forgive her for everything.

I'll forbear; And am fallen out with my more headier will To take the indisposed and sickly fit ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/12499

I'll forbear; And am fallen out with my more headier will To take the indisposed and sickly fit For the sound man.

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike.
