To me there is a much more frightening ignorance in our modern world than the "ignorance of the heathen". I am referring to the almost total ignorance of the content and implication of the Christian Faith shown by many "clever" people today. Frankly, I find it horrifying to discover that men who are experts in their own line -- in astronomy, genetics, or nuclear physics, for example -- have no adult knowledge of what the Church of Christ stands for, and a complete blank ignorance of what the Church is achieving today. It is the more horrifying because people who rightly respect the expert for his knowledge in his own field have no idea that he has not carefully examined and reluctantly discarded Christianity; but in all probability he has never studied it at all!

Paris wrapped in night! half nebulousThe moonlight streams o'er the blue-shadowed roofs..A lovely frame for this wild battlescene Beneath the ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/3862

Paris wrapped in night! half nebulousThe moonlight streams o'er the blue-shadowed roofs..A lovely frame for this wild battlescene Beneath the vapor's floating scarves, the SeineTrembles, mysterious, like a magic mirrorCyrano Act 5.

These are probably extreme cases. By this he meant that when this doctrine is understood, believed, and preached, as it was in New-Testament times, the church stands in the grace of God and is alive; but where it is neglected, overlaid, or denied, ... the church falls from grace and its life drains away, leaving it in a state of darkness and death.

The medicine chest of the soul.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/24762

The medicine chest of the soul.

I think the light bulb is beginning to flicker,

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/29381

I think the light bulb is beginning to flicker,

Thrice is he armed that hath his quarrel just; And four times he who gets his fist in fust.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/23638

Thrice is he armed that hath his quarrel just; And four times he who gets his fist in fust.

A fool flatters himself, a wise man flatters the fool.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/64261

A fool flatters himself, a wise man flatters the fool.

Polygraph tests are 20th-century witchcraft.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/9333

Polygraph tests are 20th-century witchcraft.

'Tis more brave To live, than to die.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/4860

'Tis more brave To live, than to die.

I believe that the science of chemistry alone almost proves the existence of an intelligent creator.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/54869

I believe that the science of chemistry alone almost proves the existence of an intelligent creator.

The events in our lives happen in a sequence in time, but in their significance to ourselves they find their ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/14272

The events in our lives happen in a sequence in time, but in their significance to ourselves they find their own order: the continuous thread of revelation.

Democracy does not guarantee equality of conditions--it only guarantees equality of opportunity.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/11873

Democracy does not guarantee equality of conditions--it only guarantees equality of opportunity.

The difference is no less real because it is of degree.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/12214

The difference is no less real because it is of degree.

But shapes that come not at an earthly call, Will not depart when mortal voices bid.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/60887

But shapes that come not at an earthly call, Will not depart when mortal voices bid.
