It has run its course. It is vain for eloquent atheists to talk of the great truths that will be revealed if once we see free thought begin. We have seen it end. It has no more questions to ask; it has questioned itself. You cannot call up any wilder vision than a city in which men ask themselves if they have any selves. You cannot fancy a more skeptical world than that in which men doubt whether there is a world. It might certainly have reached its bankruptcy more quickly and cleanly if it had not been feebly hampered by the application of indefensible laws of blasphemy or by the absurd pretense that modern England is Christian. But it would have reached the bankruptcy anyhow.

He may effect us directly by His Spirit, with the force of a thunderbolt, or He may choose to woo ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/7100

He may effect us directly by His Spirit, with the force of a thunderbolt, or He may choose to woo us gently by stirring up our conscience. But, in addition, God affects us by determining that in the universe certain causes shall bring about certain effects. Cause and effect is, therefore, the operation of God through normal channels rather than through special channels. We have our normal way of acting when we drive a car. We can more or less put it in "automatic pilot" while we carry on a conversation, but when an emergency arises, we take conscious personal control. I have a hunch that God has something for which this automatic pilot will serve as an illustration. That is, His routine way of operating is cause and effect, and He is in control of it, so that when cause and effect affects us, then God is affecting us. That is what the Apostle Paul means in Galatians when he says, "Do not kid yourself -- God is not blind. What you do, you will get paid for." The causes which we have set in operation by our own personal choices will inevitably bring about certain results. But God is involved because God makes cause and effect to work. [Continued tomorrow].

Consciousness: That annoying time between naps

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/43684

Consciousness: That annoying time between naps

Love came down at Christmas; love all lovely, love divine; love was born at Christmas, stars and angels gave the ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/62706

Love came down at Christmas; love all lovely, love divine; love was born at Christmas, stars and angels gave the sign.

It is extremely important that our customers understand this is an early warning for all of us to start conserving ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/39687

It is extremely important that our customers understand this is an early warning for all of us to start conserving water now, rather than face the possibility of more extreme measures later.

A day, an hour, of virtuous liberty Is worth a whole eternity in bondage.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/24677

A day, an hour, of virtuous liberty Is worth a whole eternity in bondage.

The framers gave us the Second Amendment not so we could go deer or duck hunting but to give us ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/47388

The framers gave us the Second Amendment not so we could go deer or duck hunting but to give us a modicum of protection against congressional tyranny.

The debate in Washington will focus on ideology, ... will be no less important.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/38988

The debate in Washington will focus on ideology, ... will be no less important.

A man he seems of cheerful yesterdays, And confident to-morrows.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/51861

A man he seems of cheerful yesterdays, And confident to-morrows.

At the end of knowledge, wisdom begins, and at the end of wisdom, there is not grief...but hope

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/40879

At the end of knowledge, wisdom begins, and at the end of wisdom, there is not grief...but hope

A farmer travelling with his load Picked up a horseshoe on the road, And nailed if fast to his ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/26011

A farmer travelling with his load Picked up a horseshoe on the road, And nailed if fast to his barn door, That luck might down upon him pour; That every blessing known in life Might crown his homestead and his wife, And never any kind of harm Descend upon his growing farm.

At the same time, they broke into our pastures and turned loose 35 or 40 head of horses.
