It is to be something very different from the man of to-day. It is to have a spirit yet streaming from the waters of baptism; it is to believe in love, to believe in loveliness, to believe in belief; it is to be so little that the elves can reach to whisper in your ear; it is to turn pumpkins into coaches, and mice into horses, lowness into loftiness, and nothing into everything, for each child has its fairy godmother in its own soul.

Community cannot for long feed on itself; it can only flourish with the coming of others from beyond, their unknown ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/9103

Community cannot for long feed on itself; it can only flourish with the coming of others from beyond, their unknown and undiscovered brothers.

True as the dial to the sun, Although it be not shin'd upon.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/58312

True as the dial to the sun, Although it be not shin'd upon.

My mother's menu consisted of two choices: Take it or leave it.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/10158

My mother's menu consisted of two choices: Take it or leave it.

If there is nothing wrong with me, maybe there's something wrong with the universe.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/60226

If there is nothing wrong with me, maybe there's something wrong with the universe.

Every quarrel begins in nothing and ends in a struggle for supremacy.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/52680

Every quarrel begins in nothing and ends in a struggle for supremacy.

This oiled and curled Assyrian bull, Smelling of musk and of insolence.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/51719

This oiled and curled Assyrian bull, Smelling of musk and of insolence.

This is a long-term process, ... We proceeded to live these propositions, though we would not have stated them as blandly as I set them forth here: Man is inherently good. Individual man can carve out his own salvation with the help of education and society through progressively better government. Reality and values worth searching for lie in the material world that science is steadily teaching us to analyze, catalogue, and measure. While we do not deny the existence of inner values, we relegate them to second place. The purpose of life is happiness, [which] we define in terms of enjoyable activity, friends, and the accumulation of material objects. The pain and evil of life -- such as ignorance, poverty, selfishness, hatred, greed, lust for power -- are caused by factors in the external world; therefore, the cure lies in the reforming of human institutions and the bettering of environmental conditions. As science and technology remove poverty and lift from us the burden of physical existence, we shall automatically become finer persons, seeing for ourselves the value of living the Golden Rule. In time, the rest of the world will appreciate the demonstration that the American way of life is best. They will then seek for themselves the good life of freedom and prosperity. This will be the greatest impetus toward an end of global conflict. The way to get along with people is to beware of religious dictums and dogma. The ideal is to be a nice person and to live by the Creed of Tolerance. Thus we offend few people. We live and let live. This is the American Way.

Of all the words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these... it might have been.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/53231

Of all the words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these... it might have been.

There is no darkness but ignorance.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/20375

There is no darkness but ignorance.

That man is little to be envied, whose patriotism would not gain force upon the plain of Marathon, or whose ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/45791

That man is little to be envied, whose patriotism would not gain force upon the plain of Marathon, or whose piety would not grow warmer among the runs of Iona.

I do not consider self-expression as important. And this word of God which brought all worlds into being cannot be understood to mean the Bible, for it is not a written or printed word at all, but the expression of the will of God spoken into the structure of all things. This word of God is the breath of God filling the world with living potentiality. The Voice of God is the most powerful force in nature, indeed the only force in nature, for all energy is here only because the power-filled Word is being spoken.
