The prophets were men called by God to serve as His messengers to a stubborn and unheeding people. They were always careful to point out that they were not voicing their own wisdom. Their warnings, entreaties, and promises were always prefaced by the awesome proclamation: "Thus says the Lord..." When the prophets did engage in prognostication, they usually were concerned with events which were fairly close at hand, such as the Assyrian conquest of Israel and the Babylonian conquest of Judah (both of which they foretold with deadly accuracy). But occasionally a prophet's vision ranged farther into the future, to the day when God would enter into a new covenant with his rebellious children. The hope of reconciliation was often linked with the coming of a very particular person, a Messiah or Savior. What made the prophets so sure that they had a right--nay, a duty, to speak in the name of God? It is clear from their writings that they were not megalomaniacs who confused their own thoughts with the voice of God. On the contrary, they were humble men, awe-stricken by the responsibilities thrust upon them... The prophets minced no words in their indictments of the sins of Israel and Judah, and they trod especially hard on the toes of the rich, the powerful, and the pious. The Establishment responded then as some church members are wont to respond now when a preacher speaks out on controversial public issues: "One should not preach of such things!" (Micah 2:6).

When children stand quiet, they have done some ill.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/50069

When children stand quiet, they have done some ill.

Every man's life is a fairy tale written by God's fingers

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/36291

Every man's life is a fairy tale written by God's fingers

A supreme social challenge.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/32016

A supreme social challenge.

Burroughs was a very political writer.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/39591

Burroughs was a very political writer.

If all difficulties were known at the outset of a long journey, most of us would never start out at ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/12228

If all difficulties were known at the outset of a long journey, most of us would never start out at all.

So that every wand or staff of empire is forsooth curved at top. [Lat., Adeo ut omnes imperii virga sive ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/17977

So that every wand or staff of empire is forsooth curved at top. [Lat., Adeo ut omnes imperii virga sive bacillum vere superius inflexum sit.]

The wicked flee when no man pursueth.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/48669

The wicked flee when no man pursueth.

By the end, everybody had a label -- pig, liberal, radical, revolutionary ... By this he meant that when this doctrine is understood, believed, and preached, as it was in New-Testament times, the church stands in the grace of God and is alive; but where it is neglected, overlaid, or denied, ... the church falls from grace and its life drains away, leaving it in a state of darkness and death.

Hee that stumbles and falles not, mends his pace.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/49480

Hee that stumbles and falles not, mends his pace.

Feast of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Teacher, Martyr, 1945 It is not experience of life but experience of the Cross that ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/8585

Feast of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Teacher, Martyr, 1945 It is not experience of life but experience of the Cross that makes one a worthy hearer of confessions. The most experienced psychologist or observer of human nature knows infinitely less of the human heart than the simplest Christian who lives beneath the Cross of Jesus. The greatest psychological insight, ability, and experience cannot grasp this one thing: what sin is. Worldly wisdom knows what distress and weakness and failure are, but it does not know the godlessness of men. And so it also does not know that man is destroyed only by his sin and can be healed only by forgiveness. Only the Christian knows this. In the presence of a psychiatrist I can only be a sick man; in the presence of a Christian brother, I can dare to be a sinner.

In advertising, not to be different is virtual suicide.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/28023

In advertising, not to be different is virtual suicide.

He who knows others is wise.
