He is nothing of the kind: he is simply a man who is sure of his foundation, and is convinced that the only way to any true advancement is spiritual, and is Christ; and therefore he persists, in spite of all appearances, in clinging to Christ as the only foundation, and in building all his hopes for the future on the acceptance of Christ. He is not content with attacks upon symptoms of evil; they seem to him superficial: he goes to the roots. He cannot be content with teaching men Christian principles of conduct, "Christian ideals of social life" -- still less with the establishment of colleges and clubs. Nothing but Christ Himself, faith in Christ, the obedience of Christ, seems to him equal to the need, and nothing else is his work but the establishment of that foundation. In doing this he is not showing indifference to social evils, he is not standing aloof from beneficent movements; he is actively engaged in laying the axe to the roots of the trees which bear the evil. That is not indifference.

The aster greets us as we pass With her faint smile.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/3387

The aster greets us as we pass With her faint smile.

He that sends a foole expects one.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/49392

He that sends a foole expects one.

The longer you leave it in checking, the more likely it will vanish.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/41567

The longer you leave it in checking, the more likely it will vanish.

Whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/11677

Whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well.

When a machine begins to run without human aid, it is time to scrap it - whether it be a ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/26178

When a machine begins to run without human aid, it is time to scrap it - whether it be a factory or a government

Feast of Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, Teacher, 430 But when does flesh receive the bread which He calls His ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/8450

Feast of Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, Teacher, 430 But when does flesh receive the bread which He calls His flesh? If I were to give it to you, you would think yourself of some importance, you would fancy that you had gained something very great. Because you asked for it, you have it. But take care to make good use of it. Before you had it, you were humble; now that you have begun to be rich you despise the poor. What kind of a good is that which only makes you worse? For worse you are, since you were bad already. And that it would make you worse you knew not; hence you asked it of Me. I gave it to you, and I proved you; you have found -- and you have found out!
