To justify Christianity because it provides a foundation of morality, instead of showing the necessity of Christian morality from the truth of Christianity, is a very dangerous inversion; and we may reflect that a good deal of the attention of totalitarian states has been devoted with a steadfastness of purpose not always found in democracies, to providing their national life with a foundation of morality -- the wrong kind, perhaps, but a good deal more of it. It is not enthusiasm, but dogma, that differentiates a Christian from a pagan society.

The gowne is his that we ares it, and the world his that enjoyes it.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/49862

The gowne is his that we ares it, and the world his that enjoyes it.

There are so many little dyings that it doesn't matter which of them is death.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/11188

There are so many little dyings that it doesn't matter which of them is death.

Fashion design isn't just art for art's sake. Study the advertisements in any popular magazine: people are "invited to apply for membership"; "members will receive a catalogue"; they are even offered "rules", which they gladly accept because the need for authority lies heavily upon them; they then receive a card admitting them to the circle, with the "President's signature" printed on it. In the need for belonging, the acknowledgement of dependence, may lie the greatest opportunity of the Christian evangelist. It is not unlike the conditions under which the early Church worked. In the later Roman Empire, crumbling under its own size, its communications and resources stretched to the utmost, the mystery-religions came into their own. Rites of initiation, the sharing of secret knowledge, offered to people of all classes an escape from the perplexities of life, a retreat into a closed circle of the elect where they might feel that their transformed personalities had some significance. Who can know how many weary souls there were who strayed into the Church through rumours of a secret rite of purification, of a shared meal that conferred wisdom, and who remained to comprehend the fullness of the Godhead, a belonging greater than they had ever imagined.

I've said many a time that I think the Un-American Activities Committee in the House of Representatives was the most ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/9765

I've said many a time that I think the Un-American Activities Committee in the House of Representatives was the most un-American thing in America!

An Englishman thinks seated; a Frenchman, standing; an American, pacing; an irishman, afterward.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/59178

An Englishman thinks seated; a Frenchman, standing; an American, pacing; an irishman, afterward.

The word "politics" is derived from the word "poly", meaning 'many', and the word 'ticks', meaning 'blood sucking parasites'.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/46965

The word "politics" is derived from the word "poly", meaning 'many', and the word 'ticks', meaning 'blood sucking parasites'.

The Thirsty PigeonA pigeon, oppressed by excessive thirst, saw a goblet of water painted on a signboard.
