I get upset about it, because I feel that we American Christians make too much of it, and too little. Too little of it, because we pile all sorts of other things onto it, including some that have only the feeblest connection with the Event it is supposed to commemorate. If God did become a man, in any real sense, it is the most important thing that ever happened. Surely we, who believe it, could well devote one day a year to uninterrupted contemplation of the fact, and let Saturnalia fall on the winter solstice, where it belongs. On the other hand, we make so much of the actual birth, and forget the things that make it more than just the birth of a baby (though even that is, in Walt Whitman's phrase, "miracle enough to stagger sextillions of infidels") -- more, even, than the birth of the greatest man who ever lived. We forget the promise to Eve of a descendant who will solve the problem of Evil; the promise to Abraham of one by whom all mankind will be blessed; the promise to Moses of a greater prophet than he, to arise from his people; and the promise to David of a Son who would be his Master. We forget about the eternal Purpose behind it all: it's like telling a story and leaving out the point. Yes, it is true that God gave us His Son, and so maybe we ought also to give gifts -- but what, and to whom? It is also true that God gave us Himself, and the only sensible response to that is to give ourselves to Him. There is nothing else that He wants from us, or, if there is something, He can take it. Only I, my ego, my heart, is truly mine to give or to withhold -- and is therefore the appropriate gift to Him.

Colors fade, temples crumble, empires fall, but wise words endure.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/62059

Colors fade, temples crumble, empires fall, but wise words endure.

Matter as matter rather than matter as symbol is a conscious political position, essentially Marxist.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/30982

Matter as matter rather than matter as symbol is a conscious political position, essentially Marxist.

A thorn defends the rose, harming only those who would steal the blossom.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/18740

A thorn defends the rose, harming only those who would steal the blossom.

Nothing comes to mind without thinking!

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/27522

Nothing comes to mind without thinking!

For some reason, I looked at her and realized how much I loved her.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/28422

For some reason, I looked at her and realized how much I loved her.

A kiss makes the heart young again and wipes out the years.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/25771

A kiss makes the heart young again and wipes out the years.

The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/320

The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer.

Behind every argument is someone's ignorance.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/3060

Behind every argument is someone's ignorance.

We just need to be a lot more consistent as an offensive line and as a team in the passing ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/40369

We just need to be a lot more consistent as an offensive line and as a team in the passing game and the running game.

When you love someone, all your saved-up wishes start coming out.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/61776

When you love someone, all your saved-up wishes start coming out.

Well, then--our course is chosen--spread the sail-- Heave oft the lead, and mark the soundings well-- Look to the ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/44010

Well, then--our course is chosen--spread the sail-- Heave oft the lead, and mark the soundings well-- Look to the helm, good master--many a shoal Marks this stern coast, and rocks, where sits the Siren Who, like ambition, lures men to their ruin.

If a child is to keep his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/45522

If a child is to keep his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in. -Rachel Carson.

Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must be firstovercome.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/22461

Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must be firstovercome.

No woman can call herself free who does not own and control her body. In forgetfulness, not indulgence, of the self. In escape from sensual appetites, not in their satisfaction We live in a dark, self-enclosed prison, which is all we see or know if our glance is fixed ever downward. To lift it upward, becoming aware of the wide, luminous universe outside -- this alone is happiness. At its highest level, such happiness is the ecstasy that mystics have inadequately described At more humdrum levels, it is human love; the delights and beauties of our dear earth, its colors and shapes and sounds; the enchantment of understanding and laughing, and all other exercise of such faculties as we possess; the marvel of the meaning of everything, fitfully glimpsed, inadequately expounded, but ever present.

In the 1990s we had difficulty getting kids home from school, ...
