But this distinction is only a very small part of the difference, and as such is in itself incorrect. Both of these words may convey intense emotion or may be relatively weak in their meanings. These words do not indicate degree of love, but kinds of love. Agapao refers to love which arises from a keen sense of the value and worth in the object of our love, and phileo describes the emotional attachment which results from intimate and prolonged association. That is why in the Scriptures we are never commanded to "love" with the word phileo. Even when husbands and wives are instructed to love one another, the word agapao is used, for it is impossible to command that kind of love which can arise only from intimate association. On the other hand, the saints are admonished to appreciate profoundly the worth and value in others, and agapao is used to convey this meaning. All Christians are not necessarily to have sentimental attachments for one another (phileo). This would be impossible, for our circle of intimate friends is limited by the nature of our lives. But we can all be commanded to appreciate intensely the worth of others.

Did Charity prevail, the press would prove A vehicle of virtue, truth, and love.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/23337

Did Charity prevail, the press would prove A vehicle of virtue, truth, and love.

Obviously the newcomers have a shorter period of time, they learn from the mistakes of others and so on,

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/32196

Obviously the newcomers have a shorter period of time, they learn from the mistakes of others and so on,

All religious politics are restricted to support for the Russian Orthodox Church as opposed to other religious confessions.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/41250

All religious politics are restricted to support for the Russian Orthodox Church as opposed to other religious confessions.

When Croft's "Life of Dr. Young" was spoken of as a good imitation of Dr. Johnson's style, "No, no," said ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/58100

When Croft's "Life of Dr. Young" was spoken of as a good imitation of Dr. Johnson's style, "No, no," said he, "it is not a good imitation of Johnson; it has all his pomp without his force; it has all the nodosities of the oak, without its strength; it has all the contortions of the sibyl, without the inspiration."

Labour as long liu'd, pray as even dying.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/49589

Labour as long liu'd, pray as even dying.

The pragmatist knows that doubt is an art which has to be acquired with difficulty.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/12775

The pragmatist knows that doubt is an art which has to be acquired with difficulty.

Great investment opportunities come around when excellent companies are surrounded by unusual circumstances that cause the stock to be misappraised.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/45086

Great investment opportunities come around when excellent companies are surrounded by unusual circumstances that cause the stock to be misappraised.

The English language is rather like a monster accordion, stretchable at the whim of the editor, compressible ad lib.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/24022

The English language is rather like a monster accordion, stretchable at the whim of the editor, compressible ad lib.

I had a quintuple bypass in May.
