So he automatically writes off any Biblical account of a wondrous happening which suggests that there is an order of reality transcending the observable regularities of nature and occasionally breaking in upon them. Nor is rational skepticism content with jettisoning the Bible's miracle stories. It also dismisses other passages on the grounds that they reflect the ignorance and prejudice of a particular age, or the propaganda interests of the Church at a particular stage of its development. Its basic rule of Biblical interpretation is: "When in doubt, throw it out." And the highest scores in the game of radical reductionism are awarded to pedagogues who find the most novel and far-fetched reasons for doubting that any part of the Bible really means what it says.

It is our hope we can hold these planning meetings on an annual basis and have as great a success ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/37739

It is our hope we can hold these planning meetings on an annual basis and have as great a success as Grove City has had.

Every Communist must grasp the truth: "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.".

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/47958

Every Communist must grasp the truth: "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.".

A man is about as big as the things that make him angry

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/2521

A man is about as big as the things that make him angry

Take heed of credit decaid, and people that have nothing.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/49777

Take heed of credit decaid, and people that have nothing.

When ambition ends, happiness begins.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/2365

When ambition ends, happiness begins.

Here lies who, born a man, a grocer died. [Fr., Ne homme--mort epicier.]

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/14086

Here lies who, born a man, a grocer died. [Fr., Ne homme--mort epicier.]

Often you have to rely on intuition.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/22982

Often you have to rely on intuition.

Women know not the whole of their coquetry.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/10171

Women know not the whole of their coquetry.

As far as I'm concerned, the entire reason for becoming a writer is not having to get up in the ...

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/64559

As far as I'm concerned, the entire reason for becoming a writer is not having to get up in the morning.

Be who you are and be that well.

http://www.maxioms.com/maxiom/63635

Be who you are and be that well.

That loss forced us to concentrate on the satellites. This fact ought not to be taken to imply, however, that such an effort is unjustifiable and necessarily useless. The distinctiveness of the Biblical approach is its immediacy. The theistic proofs for God's existence constitute a laborious, painstaking, and patient justification of theism. They attempt to set forth in rational argument what the soul grasps intuitively. But for the Bible, the deepest proof of God's existence is just life itself. The knowledge of God and man's knowledge of himself are closely intertwined. If only God could be written off neatly and cleanly, how simple things would be! But the hound of heaven pads after us all. He does not let us go. There is no escaping him...; when least expected, he closes in. The explanation for this is man's creation in the image of God. His identity is known theologically, in relation to the God who as a man in his true significance cannot survive permanently in isolation from his Maker. Without God, man is the chance product of unthinking fate, and so of little worth. The current loss of identity and the emergence of the faceless man in today's culture are testimony to the effects of losing our God. The knowledge of God is given in the same movement in which we know ourselves.
